So with all of the visitors that we have in and out of town, we have a couple of Southern California tourism books that we keep on hand. One was a gift from Reba (see post below) when I first moved to Cali, and my mom brought the second one.
I like having two for cross-reference.
As cheesy as they can be at times, they have lots of good information in them. I was recently perusing the Orange County restaurants section and came across several places that sounded interesting that we were thinking about trying.
So, locals, what do you think? Have any of you been to these places?
Here's the ones I'd like to try:
Lonely Planet recommends:
Walt's Wharf (Seal Beach): "Everybody's favorite for fresh fish - some people even come from LA".
Bluewater Grill (Newport): "Sit on the wooden deck and watch the boats at this harborside restaurant that serves off-the-boat-fresh fish".
Fodor's recommends:
Javier's (Laguna, Spectrum, Crystal Cove): I have heard some local recommendations for this one. Which location is best? Is it really that good?
The Cannery (Newport): Fodor's recommended - can you tell we like seafood?
Prego (Irvine): A larger version of the Beverly Hills restaurant
So what do we think? Has anyone been to these and what do you think?

Javier's: Not in Laguna anymore, but still at those other places. Delicious food, but WAY overpriced.
The Cannery: YUM
Walt's Wharf: I think it is pretty similar to any restaurant on a pier. Save your gas money and go to San Clemente.
Definately not a local, but last year we went to The Cannery (Newport) after a concierge recommendation, and we both thought it was over-priced and over-commercialized. The crab cakes were good, and they had quite a wine selection, but the rest of the food was just okay. Overall I'd only give it a 5 out of 10. Natalie Lester
Prego - really yummy Italian...a good choice!
Javiers - really good Mexican...I love it there...be ready to spend $$
I want to add one more to the list for when you're celebrating an anniversary or something super special (because it's really expensive) - Mastros Ocean Club in Crystal Cove. It's so delicious, it has an incredible view, and the decor inside is lovely.
Oh - and one more - The Beachcomber. If you've never been there, you're missing out. It's literally right on the beach in Laguna/Crystal Cove.
The new Javier's is FABULOUS! Yes, a tad over-priced but OH so good! And the location is AMAZING! The restaurant is so beautifully decorated too. Totally worth the trip.
Of course Montage has GREAT restaurants!
(I'll join you for a drink sometime!!)
