It's definitely been Fire Week in the Rosenbaum world this week. The excitement started last Monday with major dessert disaster #2 of the past year - Apple Pie. My mom has this amazing recipe where you bake the pies in brown grocery bags. It doesn't work out so well, however, when your bags burst into flames and your husband has to use the fire extinguisher to put them out. In my head, I was actually thinking, oh, maybe if he doesn't spray very much we can salvage the pies. Bummer.
So after surviving fire #1 of the week, we move on to the other fires of the week that started over the weekend, with our very own Foothill Ranch fire that started about 24 hours ago. Yes, the Santiago Canyon/Irvine fire just happens to be in our backyard. Luckily it's the only major fire in Orange County. We are thankful for our safety and the firefighters seem to have done an amazing job keeping the fire back from our neighborhood. Here's some views from the day - everything is quite smokey and ashy - yuck!
The view on the drive to work this morning - this was about 9:30am:
Here's a view of our house from a couple of hours ago! Wow!
We really feel extremely safe right now so we don't want to worry anyone. Let's just hope that the Santa Ana winds slow down so the fires don't continue to spread! It's definitely been a crazy day here!

ryan didn't start the fire, mary started the fire.
you forgot to mention the part where you tried to beat the flames into submission with a dish towel and how our smoke detectors all went off at the same time just after midnight and we had to bury them in the linen closet so we didn't scare all of our neighbors.
who knew ya'll live such exciting lives? i bet those pies would have been perfect otherwise. and the stove started the fire not mary!
so glad you guys are ok...you do live such lives of adventure!! hope there are no more fires to add to your list!
During my semester in Claremont in 2003, the fires were raging just a few miles away. We walked out one morning to ash falling down like snow. Very surreal.
But if they get any closer to you, it's good to know that Adam has a fire extinguisher and you have a dishtowel. :)
scary - glad yall are safe.
mar, that makes me think of the time reba and i tried to fire her clay ballerina she made w/my pottery clay in our apt 108 oven... it exploded and we were afraid to open the oven bc we knew it would be bursting w/ flames .... but it wasn't :)
i'll remember the dish towel trick
I've been thinking about you guys, so I am glad to hear that everything's okay.
Our oven caught on fire, too, on Sunday night!!!! But, it wasn't because of anything we did...the coil just started emitting this horrible white electric flame and then regular flames. As soon as we turned off the oven it died out, thankfully! We discovered that if you ever call a customer service line (whirlpool) and mention that your oven caught on fire they'll do just about anything for you - and for free :) We should have a new oven (or just a new coil) by the end of the week.
